PPG17 and open space strategies
In a nutshell
The publication of Planning Policy Guidance Note 17 (Planning for Open Space, Sport and Recreation, July 2002) and its Companion Guide (September 2002), requires all local authorities to carry out assessments of needs and audits of open space and sports and recreational facilities’ in accordance with PPG17.
We have successfully completed over 60 open space strategies for local authorities and developers.
Our offer
Our services range from delivery of a full strategy to providing advice and support on specific elements of open space work. These services can include:
Establishing local needs through various consultation and market research techniques
Undertaking a full audit in accordance with PPG17 guidance
Quantity assessment of open space provision including location, areas and types of open space
Detailed site assessments of quality, accessibility and wider benefits
Preparation of a Microsoft Access database and/or Microsoft Excel spreadsheets containing specific assessment information on each open space site
Using Geographical Information Systems to capture the locations and attributes of open spaces
Identification of deficiencies and surpluses (using maps and projections) in accordance with local needs both now and in the future
Determination and application of local standards for each type of open space provision
Priorities and recommendations for action covering quantity, quality, accessibility, re-designation, replacement, new sites, future investment and strategic priorities leading to the development of planning policies
A clear picture of existing and future needs for open space and a clear direction to you through detailed implementation and action plans.
